Main uses of Salt

MAKING THE BEST SALT OF LATAM

Sometimes uses of salt marketers in this section

Water Treatment

The content of calcium and magnesium carbonates determines the degree of hardness of drinking water. In some cases, mainly for the generation of steam, resins are used to soften the water by exchanging the calcium and magnesium ions of the water of sodium ions that the resin contains.

The salt provides new sodium ions to the resins
The salt provides new sodium ions to the resins to be reusable indefinitely.
Chlorine, like sodium hypochlorite, is used as a water disinfectant.

Chemical Industry

The chlor-alkali industry is the largest sector of the chemical sector that is used to produce chlorine and as a byproduct of sodium hydroxide (known as caustic soda or lye).
To make synthetic commercial soda.

In plants that elaborate sodium chlorate, metallic sodium and other processes that are used as raw material. It is used in the manufacture of vinyl chloride, which is the basis of polyvinyl chloride resins. Salt with sulfuric acid is used to produce sodium sulfate and hydrochloric acid.

In soaps and powdered detergents, it is used as a filler and as a coagulant for the colloidal dispersion after the saponification process. The pharmaceutical industry uses salt as a chemical and electrolytic reagent in saline solutions.

Other industries

Oil and gas exploration. It is used as a flocculant and to increase the density of drilling fluids, to avoid the dissolution of saline horizons and to increase the rate of cementing of the concrete used in drilling.

Processing of metals
In foundries, refineries and factories of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Salt is used in the manufacturing processes of aluminum, beryllium, copper, steel and vanadium and in the uraniu
concentration process.

Cellulose
To whiten or discolor the wood pulp.

Textiles and dyes
It is used in the form of saturated solutions (brines) to separate organic contaminants in the fibers; it is mixed with the dyes to standardize the concentrates and favors the absorption
of the dyes in the fabrics.

Tanneries
In these industries the salt is used to inhibit the microbial action inside the skins, as well as to subtract moisture from them.

Rubber
Brine and sulfuric acid are used as latex coagulants, which makes it necessary for the manufacture of some types of rubber (neoprene and white rubber).

Human consumption

Salt is added to foods to enhance flavor; as a preservative, binder and additive to control fermentation; to give texture, develop color and as an agent dehydrator,
softener and inhibitor of enzymes.

In particular, it is used in:

Meats
Salt is added to processed meats to develop color in bacon, hams and other products. It inhibits the growth of bacteria in food. It acts as a binder in sausages forming a jelly made up of meat, fat and liquids. Accents the flavors and softens the meats.

Dairy products
The salt is added to the cheeses, butters and creams to control the fermentation, color and texture and to improve the flavors.

Other foods
In the manufacture of food for human consumption (chips, snacks, etc.) and animals (dogs and cats), in these cases the salt is used to enhance the flavors and as a seasoning.

Bread
To control the degree of fermentation of the masses of the loaves, to strengthen the gluten (elastic protein) and to improve the flavor.

Flours

Ice control, road stabilization and deicing

To control the thaw in streets and highways. During road construction, salt is used to firm the terrain.
